MATTHEW CHAPTER 6
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come . Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Here are helpful hints as we study:
Hagiadzo is the Koine Greek word used for "Hallowed Be..." Jesus had a specific point of reference from Torah and we often miss the point of reference or fail to connect the dots regarding His statement Our Father which art in Heaven hallowed be thy name. Both the Lords Prayer and the third commandment are designed to give an accurate perspective and the highest esteem to the "name of the Lord."
Jesus is referring to the "Ten Commandments." He was intimate with "Torah" and the Ten Commandments specifically "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain." Jesus is reiterating the 3rd commandment when He says "Our Father which art in Heaven hallowed be thy name. Jesus was saying the following:
According to the Torah you should know Gods name is holy. The twelve disciples who were Messianic Jews also knew Torah and could understand Jesus' point of reference in the Torah. Messianic Judaism is directly referenced in Revelation 7:4-8 as we interpret literally the 144,000 Jewish evangelists sealed by God twelve thousand from each tribe of Israel. Messianic Judaism shall be the final project implemented by Ha Shem in the end times. See it for yourself as we read the facts literally.
Jesus knew that the disciples having CHABAD training since their childhood as Jews were already familiar with the third commandment of Moshe which says the following thus what He was saying was not foreign to them:
Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name. (NIV)
You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. (NLT)
Gods name can only be used to articulate his attributes but never associated with the unclean thing. His name must be set aside for Holy things only because He is Holy.
Orthodox Judaism never say or use the personal name of God to risk violating the third commandment. To address God the words Ha Shem is used in conversation and Adonai is used in prayer. "Ha" is a definite article which means "the" and "Shem" means "name" thus Ha Shem means "the name." When Orthodox Jews say the word Ha Shem they are referring to the holiest name in Judaism, the personal name of "God Our Father Which Art in Heaven" that they do not use. Adonai means "Lord" and in the Koine Greek of the New Testament the counter part for Lord used is "Kurios."How did we arrive at the names YaHWeH or JeHoVaH?
The following is Gods Personal Name reading from right to left:
Yode
Hay
Vav
Hay
By transliteration which is using the letter of one alphabet to help pronounce the letter of another alphabet one to one or letter for letter so any person can pronounce a word in their own language.
For the top letter "yode" we assigned a "Y" or a "J" to capture two alternative sounds.
For the "hay" second from the top we assigned an "H"
For the "Vav" third from the top we assigned a "V" from the english alphabet.
For the last "hay" we assigned an "H"
Thus we arrived at Y H V H all consonants so the word had no sounds. Thus we added vowels to give sound to the consonants and we arrived at Yahveh or YahWeh. The other alternative pronunciation was to use a "J" instead of Y thus we arrived at J H V H and added vowels to give the letters sound thus we arrived at Jehovah.
There is a greek term used to describe the personal name of God and the term is "Tetragrammaton" which means "a four letter word." Thus the personal name of God is also referred to as the "Tetragrammaton."
The take away from the names of God is to experience God personally and to know He is holy, awesome, worthy of our respect, worthy of applaud, honor and deep appreciation. As we pray "Our Father" "Which art in heaven" "hallowed be thy name" we linger at each interval, internalize who God is, His character and attributes, the vastness of His creation and respecting His personal name as hallowed. Note at the end of the prayer we come under His authority and gratefully receive His delegated authority.
There is only one God, there is no other God besides Him in all of eternity past, present and future and His name is JeHoVaH. This is the message of "Shema Yisrael Adonai elohenu Adonai ehad." Hear Oh Israel the Lord is our God, the Lord is one found in Deuteronomy 6:4-9. In this day and age we must be clear there is not a plurality of gods but there is only one God and one way to Him which is by faith in Jesus Christ.
Isaiah 6:3 says Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh Adonai Tsevaot melo khol ha arets kevodo. In English it says Holy, Holy, Holy the Lord of Hosts the fullness of all the earth His glory.
The concept of holy includes being entirely set apart from the common and the profane with full differentiation. Adonai is distinct, one of a kind, utterly peerless and without rival. With all of His holiness God is close to man His choice creation and we have to discipline ourselves not to take Him for granted and to comprehend the concept of His holiness. Let us draw near to Him as He is willing with full cognition of His holiness and receive His Spirit.
